A globally recognized independent art curator and critical writer with more than 20 years’ experience in the field of contemporary art, Cathy Byrd directs and produces Fresh Talk for the online media platform FreshArtInternational.com.
Since 2011, Byrd has built an archive of more than 80 conversations about creativity in the 21st century. Byrd's guests have included Joan Jonas, Jason Moran, Irene Hofmann, William Pope.L, Theaster Gates, Tania Bruguera, Camille Norment, Franklin Sirmans, Cheryl Pope, Lynda Benglis, Jillian Mayer, Andrea Bowers, and Remy Jungerman, among others.
In 2013, Byrd produced a series of art news segments for KUT Austin, featuring Cine Las Americas film festival, Louis Grachos, Director of The Contemporary, Austin, the architecture of Edgeland House, and more. Among Byrd’s collaborative curatorial projects are Losing Yourself in the 21stCentury (2009-2010), a traveling exhibition exploring performance video work by young women artists; Le Flash Atlanta, a new genre public art performance event (2008, 2009); Reconstructing Atlanta (2008), a multi-venue series of exhibitions and events centered on contemporary urban issues; and Potentially Harmful: The Art of American Censorship (2006), an exhibition and programs examining thirty years of highly provocative contemporary art.
Byrd has worked with written about artists including Janet Biggs, Didier Faustino, Antoni Muntadas, Karen Finley, Bahar Behbahani, Pierre Huyghe, Lynda Benglis, Carolee Schneemann, Susan Lee-Chun, Jefferson Pinder, Meshac Gaba, Zoë Charlton, and Danwen Xing. Her writing appears in numerous catalogue essays, as well as in features, profiles and reviews for Art in America, Art Papers, Sculpture, Public Art Review, contemporary, Art & Antiques, artnet.com and Beaux Arts.
