ACT LIKE YOU BEEN THERE :: MICHAEL JONES
September 19 - November 14, 2024
ACT LIKE YOU'VE BEEN THERE includes recent works by artist-in-residence Michael Jones. Through painting and mixed media, Jones challenges the conventions of painting while exploring the intricate relationship between space and place. Drawing inspiration from local found experiences—such as disc golf, thrift store treasures, and the lively atmosphere of Ybor nightlife—his work intricately weaves together imagery that reflects both materiality and personal perspective.
Michael Jones was born in Dallas, Texas, and moved to Atlanta in 1994. No stranger to large scale work, Jones has completed public murals on buildings and walls throughout America. He has curated Westside Murals, a collective effort between the community and fourteen emerging artists blending mural and street art installations onto the interior walls of self-service car wash bays. Jones’ Moving Targets series was exhibited at Rosa Parks Museum, in Montgomery, Alabama, and Eyedrum in Atlanta. Riots and Rallies, Parades and Protest is his latest series of work which was presented in 2021 at Swan Coach House and in Tampa, Florida, at Tempus Project. Doughnuts in the Night was Jones’ most recent show, at Whitespec in Atlanta. Jones received his bachelor’s degree in Painting and Sculpture from Atlanta College of Art (now SCAD) in 1998.
