PIRACY REDUX : Re-examining the Myth of the Buccaneer :: Group Exhibition
2.22.13
Kiley Gardens
The 2013 Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts announces plans for PIRACY
REDUX: Re-examining the Myth of the Buccaneer, a project featuring art, video,
dance and music from local and international talent, in Kiley Gardens in Downtown
Tampa. Presented by The Raymond James Gasparilla Festival of the Arts and curated
by Tempus Projects and Hampton Arts Management, the exhibition explores the myth
of the pirate as it relates to Tampa’s Gasparilla celebrations; specifically, the
juxtaposition of the true image of the buccaneer as it conflicts with the
representation engendered by the wealthy Caucasian males who began the tradition
more than 50 years ago. Artists from diverse cultural backgrounds explore this image
through a variety of mediums, including video, sculpture and installation.
Furthermore, they re-contextualize the image of the pirate and offer their
interpretations of the mythology of piracy.
